The setting takes place at the end of the 16th century, Elizabethan England, in a small town called Cumberland in the North of England. Peter Brownrigg, a 14 year-old boy and his family and fellow villagers, were in a secret protest against Sir Phillip Morton, a knight who was stealing away their lands. But the initial incident began when Peter throws a rock at Sir Phillip, and accidently left his hat at the place. Sir Phillip found Peter's hat and decided to find and punish him. Peter, who needed to save his dear life, had to run away from his family and home, and began an adventure in London; there, he started a career as an actor.
Why do you the author made the protagonist run away from his troubles instead of facing them? Was it because in some ways, it can lead the main character into an exciting adventure instead of letting him getting caught? Or might it have been because Sir Phillip is a man with power, and if Peter just faces him, he will be be likely caught and punished? Or as some people argue, the author might have wanted to show a character development of Peter being a young man who was a coward and not wanting to face his troubles, to a brave heroic man who at last is courageous and can face his troubles. The author could have possibly wanted the protagnist to learn his mistakes through his journey and learn from them, and perhaps show us the growth of his maturity and adventures through the novel. Through Peter's journey, the author might have also wanted us to learn more about the tume in Elizabethean England, and how women's and men's status big difference.
Should people face their troubles or not? Some people say that you should most definitely face your troubles because you can never run or hide from them and try to solve or stop them. Your problems won’t disappear if you just hide from them, as the quote "You can run, but you can't hide" also states. From my own experiences, I have tried to run away from troubles such as hiding a heavy secret in my heart and not wanting to tell anyone about it, but in the end, I cannot hide from it from my parents or friends, and in the end I gather up my courage and face the secrets in my heart and eventually talk about them with whom I trust, such as my parents or friends. From a novel I read a couple years ago, a girl was suffering from an abusive family and inherited mental health difficulties... she tried running away from her troubles, the reality. However, that did not help her get better. It did not allow her to realize the reality she was in. She did not want to tell other people about her situation, and did not want to accept anyone’s help. But at last, she found people who were in the same situation as she was; they communicated, they helped one another, and most of all, they tried to solve their problems instead of running away from it which does not help.
If you were in Peter's position, what would you have done? Would you have stayed and faced Sir phillip? Or would you have ran away like Peter? Most people answer, in Peter's cases, the best would be for him to run away. Knowing that Sir Phillip is a cold and unforgiving man, if you stayed, you could have gotten into bigger trouble. So running away like Peter, should be the better Choice. So in this situation, perhaps running away from you troubles is a good idea. Also,  In a particular Korean drama I have watched, the daughter of a couple leaned that she had cancer. But they would not dare to tell their daughter because they were afraid that she would die from fright. So instead, they informed her that she had a minor illness and acted like everything was fine. Surprisingly, the daughter recovered because she was happy and confident that she only had a minor illness and soon recovered!  So instead, in that particular case, the parents made a right decision to not tell their daughter the truth so the daughter can “run away” from the fact that she had cancer. Also, in one of my friend’s experiences, her parents fought constantly and she did not have the courage to face her parents and tell them to stop. So instead, she went to live with her grandma for awhile, and after she came back, her parents had stopped fighting.
In my opinion, I think you should always face your troubles because you can never hide or run away from them. When I hide from my troubles, I would feel extremely bothered because I know that I will be able to avoid it for awhile, but I cannot avoid it forever. Sooner or later, I will need to face my troubles, and eventually get it solved. In some cases, I believe running away from your troubles will not help at all, but it would also complicate the matters.

Shold we use blogger in the future or not?

Although there were quite a few of technical difficulties in the beginning of blogging, I find Blogger very convenient, and we definitely should continue using it!
First of all, by using blogger, we can give each other responses faster at home, instead of using time during class to give suggestions and opinions. Also, by using blogger, we can troll around to see other group’s responses, and therefore, it can help us to find more ideas and perhaps learn more things! It can also give you some clues on if you are doing the questions right, or how should you ass more suggestions to your group member's response. To students who usually do not like to express their opinions during class-time, this is also a great way for them to communicate with his/her fellow students online.
The only problem I have with blogger is students usually do not have as much pressure in posting on time! But hopefully we can overcome that. Other than that, I hope we can continue using blogger!

Blogging or Not?

I think that we should continue blogging. Blogger is a great thing to learn how to do at our age because when we are older it will be easier because we already know how to do it that is if we ever need it in a job. Blogging has much more Pros about it such as communicative skills, group cooperation, constructive criticism, and many more things. I understand that some people believe that it is bad because it hurts your eyes, its confusing etc, but if you look at our society today, most kids at our age have phones, facebook, twitter and other things that involve electronics and posting about things, so why not use it for educational purposes?

Blogging

I believe that we should keep on blogging. Blogging has helped many people including me with their writing. If we  look at blogger it has many up side . One of those up sides is you get comments from others, some times when you edit in class the people whom you edit with won't give you that good of a comment all that they will say is that it is good. An other good reason is experience. I believe that Ms. Lees touch on it before in class, that in the future you may get a job which makes you blog so it is important that you have the back ground knowledge to blogging. Also it may give you a chance to work with people that you may not regularly work with and see how they judge your work instead of the regular people that you may work with.

Comment to Robyn's Question

I think it was good that you added some connections into your context, and your general statement quite clear and understandable to the reader. One thing I think you work more on, is perhaps expanding your thoughts to a great extent, and adding more paragraphs in to your writing.Overall, i think you did a good job on answering the question!

Robyn's question

I like the hero that you compared Peter to, and how you provided examples. Your punctuation would be better. Overall it is a good response.

Response to Manjot's Question # 3: Great job Manjot, i agree with Cerella. I would have liked to see more writing and for you to go into more detail! You also didn't answer the last part of the question, but maybe when you have some time to fix it up later on you could add on to what you have already written!

Response to Cerella's Question # 1 : Wow! Good Job, I don't think you missed any points! However I do agree with Manjot. Not that you could start them better but maybe instead of continuing on your point make it so each paragraph is stating a new point so start off fresh. Other than that you did a fantastic job!

Cerella's question

Good job in answering the whole question and not leaving anything out. However there are some parts that could use some improvment. Such as your paragraphs could start off a bit better. In this line ''but in the end, I cannot hide from it from my parents or friends, and in the end I gather up my courage and face the secrets in my heart and eventually talk about them with whom I trust, such as my parents or friends''you repeat your self, you say ''but in the end.........and in the end you say the some thing but in different words. Whole together it was a really good answer.

Response to manjot's question #3 post

I like how you started of the paragraph with information on different kinds of heros! But it would have been better if you provided a little bit of information on Peter, because for those who never read the book, they will have no idea what you may be talking about! Also, you should explain some of the "accidental heros", and you should also explain and provide examples to Peter from someone in the past or present that you would call a hero. Overall, good response, but you should answer more of the questions from #3 and expain more of the things that you stated! : )

Question #1

The setting takes place at the end of the 16th century, Elizabethan England, in a small town called Cumberland in the North of England. Peter Brownrigg, a 14 year-old boy and his family and fellow villagers, were in a secret protest against Sir Phillip Morton, a knight who was stealing away their lands. Peter, who needed to save his dear life, had to run away from his family and home, and began an adventure in London; there, he started a career as an actor.
The author made the choice of letting the protagonist run away from his troubles instead of facing them because, in some ways, it can lead the main character into an exciting adventure instead of letting him getting caught. Because Sir Phillip is a man with power, if Peter just faces him, he will be be likely caught and punished. Or the author might have wanted to show a character development of Peter being a young man who was a coward and not wanting to face his troubles, to a brave heroic man who at last is courageous and can face his troubles.
Should people face their troubles or not? Some people say that you should most definitely face your troubles because you can never run or hide from them and try to solve or stop them. Your problems won’t disappear if you just hide from them, as the quote "You can run, but you can't hide" also states. But at last, she found people who were in the same situation as she was; they communicated, they helped one another, and most of all, they tried to solve their problems instead of running away from it which does not help.
On the other hand, some people do not wish to face their troubles because it may bring inconvenience to the people around them. And other times, it may be hard to run away from our troubles. For example, in Peter's case, it will not give him an opportunity for a chance to escape, and instead it can get him in to even bigger trouble. In a particular Korean drama, the daughter of a couple leaned that she had cancer.

Question # 3

What is a hero? The meaning of hero can not really be defined. It really depends on personal preference. Some people believe that a hero is someone who saves lives, but that isn't always true. A hero can also be a person who gives positive influences everyday and really makes a difference in peoples lives. A hero can be a person who is trustworthy, and reliable.

This novel is about two young teens who have crazy adventures. This is a historical fiction, and it takes place in Shakespearean England. This novel teaches you about Shakespeare himself and Queen Elizabeth I. In this novel A young boy named Peter Brownrigg is faced with many different situations. In some of the situations Peter faces he must play the role of a hero. In some of the situations Peter chooses to act like a hero but in others he has no choice. An example of when he has no choice was when he saved Mr.Dunsmend from drowning in the lake. Peter couldn't of just stood there and watched Mr dunsmend drown. In other situations such as saving the Queen and covering for Kit, Peter had a choice of being a hero. He kept Kits secret all along and helped her so no one would find out she was really a girl. Peter Brownrigg is a hero in two ways. He is a hero by choice and a hero by chance.

In a way you could compare Peter to a parent now a days. You could think of parents like heros' too. They would risk their lives for you. They are always there when you need them and they will always help you when you are having a hard time.

Question #3

We meet  heroes everyday whether we know it or not. Some people are hero's for their children. Sport athletes are heroes in many people's eyes. Firemen, cops, and doctors are heroes that save life's. Can  Peter be consider a hero, even though he ran away from his problem, that was running away from Sir Phillip (the noble Peter and his family work for) after he threw a rock at Sir Phillip, and was going to be charged with attempt to murder.
Peter can be looked upon as a hero. He put his life in danger to save the life of the queen. He over shadowed many obstacles reach the queen such as,when he got away from Sir Phillip and his man after they got him at the old building. However if Peter had not gave the man in the yellow clothing the play this problem of the queen getting killed would not have taken place. The good thing however was once he figured out the plan of the bad guys he rushed to get to the queen.
The type of hero I would compare to Peter is a fireman. Both put their life's in danger to protect the life's of others. They are not shy to take on a challenge ( In Peter's case to get to the queen before she died), and both must hurry to get to their destination.
I believe that Peter can be look as a hero because of his efforts to save the queen. A hero is not one who only saves lifes but is a role model for younger people.

comments for Manjots Posts.

Manjot: The big A.

You did a great job of explaining. One thing i would suggest is try not to stereotype , not all Christians believe that it is chosen. I would like to see you go into more detail when you are talking about the last part (the path of the doctor). I'd like to know more details about what you mean. Otherwise you did a great job of explaining.

chapter 1 and 2 response

The first two chapters are mostly based on introducing characters, setting, conflict etc. I am having a hard time getting into this book. For this book you have to really think about it and pay attention to every little detail. I don't think peter should have threw the rock at sir Phillips but i also dont think that sir phillips should have made it such a huge deal because it didn't actually hit him. Sir Phillips went to far building a fence on someone else's property I think that Peter should have been more careful because now he left his hat behind with his name on it, what if this causes problems in the future ( the rest of the book ).

* i dont know why but blogger isnt letting me post on my computer this is the third time ive written this out. hopefully it works.*

response to robyn's post!

I agree with your thoughts, and i too believe that although in some circumastances you cannot change your fate, and it is your decision to choose the right path for yourself. But i think that some parts, like your religious comment, should be explained more clearly!

Chapter 1 and 2

The first two chapters were like any other book. It introduce the reader to the main and supporting charcters of the story. When I figured out that Peter was wearing a hat I was confused. I say this because he was wearing a hat at night. I understand if it was in the day because he wants to protect himself from the sunlight but during the night a hat isn't needed.
When Sir Phillip started to build a gate on the farmer's property, this reminded me of the construction on  96 Aveune. The goverment is going in to other people's yards to expand the road. It is causing damage to other people's yards.
If we go back into time an example is when the British people took over Canada and US  from the native people who lived here way before they did. They came over and it was cold. The native people gave the British food and shelter and the Britsh people in return gave them liquor and took over their land.

The Big A

I think that it depends on the person whether their life path is determined or not. Some peoples religious views say that they have to go through things as told, some young women are married young without any say. I don't think that every person has a set path that they are born with, i believe we were given a challenge when we were born and that's to face all the decisions we have now and the decisions the future holds for us. Everyone makes mistakes and i think that every mistake is a lesson learned, i dont think we were born to do any certain things, I think it depends on how hard we try, and attitude we have towards life.

PS. sorry this is really late, i couldnt figure out how to post, turns out i wasnt an author yet.

Response to Manjot's Big A (since i cant seem to comment on his post)

I liked how you provided examples relating to God, but there are a few points that I do not understand. I have encountered many Christians that do not think that god has chosen their paths, so I don’t think that it really depends on god. Rather than that, I think it really depends on yourself of what you believe in, and how hard you try. And I have no idea how we, scientifically, would know that our lives were written before we were born! Although, I agree that in some cases, it does depend on your parents, and what they want you to do. But I have also seen numerous cases that people foolow and accomplish their own dreams rather than following what their parents want them to do. I also personally do not think you can predict your future. You can only dream about it, and try hard to accomplish it. Sometimes, even if you predict what you want to do in the future, but do not try to accomplish it, at last, you will not achieve that goal! And in some other cases, people change their thoughts about what to do in the future. :)

Chapter 1 and 2 review for cue for treason.(historial fiction novel)

The setting takes place in the at the end of the 16th centurey, Elizabethan England, in a small town called Cumberland in the North of England. Peter Brownrigg, a 14 year-old boy  and his family and fellow villagers, were in a secret protest againt Sir Phillip Morton, a knight who was stealing away their lands. But the initial incident began when Peter throws a rock at Sir Phillip(but missed). Peter went to school the next day(chapter 2), and boasted to his classmates about the adventure he had encountered last night. But because his classmates refused to believe him, he wished that his hat, with the bullet hole through it, had been with him. I personally think that this boy can be a little slow at times! Shouldn't he have known, therefore be extremely frightened, thsat he left his hat behind with his name? Shouldnt he have a clue that they will discover this and therfore use it as as an  evidence to catch him and then sentence him to some sort of crime?  I personally think that Peter is a stubborn and mischievous child who, at times, do not think before they act. If he only had he obeyed his father's rules, staying put until he recieves an order- then he would be clean from this entire mess! So the next day, in order to escape after finding out he was in trouble after being told by his parents, he left the village the following day. He had recieved 5 shillings from his father, and some food from his mother, and his journey begins. I am eager and excited to read the next chapter and find out what will happen next!!^^

Big A

I believe that it depends on whether you believe in god or not. A person who doesn't believe in god probably doesn't think that our lives are made before we are born but a person who believes in god probably does. It also depends on your parents and if they want you to live a life they want you to live. I think a man can not change his life. I believe our lives are written before we are even born, even if you think you are changing your life it was probably written to be like that in the first place.

You probably can predict what will happen to your life in the future. For example, you may want to become a doctor and in the future. Then you do become a doctor, but the route you take to enter that professional field you will never know, whether you will be elected by a university right away, after some time or not at all.

Monday, 17 October 2011

Was a person's life path determined before they were born? Is it today? Or can a man change his stars as the clip suggests?

I believe that a person’s life path can be determined before they were born, or it may not be. I used to believe that it is entirely the person’s choice to choose their life path, but recently I realized that sometimes, a person’s life path cannot be changed. For example, the women in Muslim and such countries, has their fate led out to them the day they were born. Because they were girls, they had no rights, they could not do what they wanted, instead they get married early, endure beatings from their husband, and they have the least right in the house. So sometimes, I believe, in certain circumstances, a person’s life path cannot be changed. However, on the other hand, if you were born into a better environment, you may be able to change and choose your own path.  In democratic countries like Canada, children have the freedom to choose what they want to do in the future. And in some circumstances, I think a man, like in the video clip for example; can change his stars as the clip suggests. As long as they try their hardest, even when they meet obstacles, I believe it is possible to accomplish their goals as long they don’t give up.
